About Disease

Retinal detachment is a serious retinal disease that refers to the separation between the neuroepithelial layer and the pigment epithelial layer of the retina. This phenomenon can cause the detached part of the retina to be unable to perceive light stimuli, resulting in weakened vision or even blindness. There are various causes of retinal detachment, including high myopia, retinal degeneration, eye trauma, diabetes retinopathy, etc.

Symptoms of retinal detachment

Common symptoms of retinal detachment include sudden loss of vision, floating black shadows in front of the eyes (floaters), flashes, and visual field defects. The appearance of these symptoms often indicates the possibility of retinal detachment and requires timely medical attention.

Latest treatment methods

For the treatment of retinal detachment, the appropriate method is mainly selected based on its type and severity. Here are several common treatment methods:

Laser therapy: suitable for early retinal detachment, especially for cases with only small holes or shallow detachment around the retina. Laser can seal the hole and prevent further development of retinal detachment.

Scleral buckle surgery: By using special silicone or sponge on the outside of the eyeball to apply pressure to the sclera, causing it to protrude inward, thereby lifting the detached retina and sealing the hole. This method is suitable for situations where the tear is clear and the extent of retinal detachment is not large.

Vitrectomy: For retinal detachment with a large detachment range or complex conditions such as vitreous hemorrhage and inflammation, vitrectomy surgery is required. During the surgery, the vitreous body will be removed to relieve tension on the retina, and the hole will be sealed with laser. Depending on the condition, gas or silicone oil may also be injected into the eye to flatten the retina and seal the tear.

matters needing attention

Retinal detachment is an emergency that requires early detection and timely treatment. The recovery of visual function after treatment is closely related to the time of retinal detachment, and the shorter the time, the better the recovery effect. Therefore, once relevant symptoms appear, seek medical attention immediately and follow the doctor's advice for treatment. At the same time, for high-risk populations such as high myopia, regular fundus examinations should be performed to prevent the occurrence of retinal detachment.
