Spinal cord cavity syndrome is a chronic and progressive spinal cord disease characterized by the formation of tubular cavities in the spinal cord (especially in the gray matter) accompanied by glial cell proliferation. This disease often occurs in the cervical spinal cord, and when the lesion affects the medulla oblongata, it is called medullary cavity syndrome. The etiology is currently not fully understood, but it is generally believed to be related to congenital developmental abnormalities or spinal cord lesions.

The clinical manifestations of syringomyelia are diverse, mainly including segmental sensory disorders, limb movement disorders, and Horner syndrome. Patients may experience a decrease or disappearance of pain and temperature sensation, but deep sensations (such as position and vibration sensation) are relatively preserved, forming a so-called 'segmental dissociative sensory disorder'. In addition, as the condition progresses, patients may also experience symptoms such as muscle weakness, muscle atrophy, and even paralysis.


diagnostic method

The diagnosis of syringomyelia mainly relies on imaging examinations, especially magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MRI can clearly display the location, size, and morphology of spinal cord cavities, making it the preferred method for diagnosing spinal cord cavities.


Latest treatment methods

At present, the treatment of syringomyelia mainly includes two categories: drug therapy and surgical treatment.


Drug therapy: mainly using B vitamins and other neurotrophic drugs to maintain the normal function of the nervous system and alleviate the condition. However, drug therapy usually only has an auxiliary effect and cannot cure the disease.

Surgical treatment: For patients with severe symptoms and large cavities, surgical treatment is the first choice. Surgical methods include posterior fossa decompression, spinal cord cavity diversion, etc., aimed at eliminating or reducing the compression of the spinal cord by the cavity and promoting nerve function recovery. In recent years, with the development of minimally invasive technology, some new surgical methods such as cell infiltration repair therapy have gradually been applied in clinical practice and have achieved good therapeutic effects.
