Prostate cancer is a common malignant tumor in the male reproductive system, mainly occurring in the epithelial cells of the prostate gland. The following is an introduction to prostate cancer and its latest treatment methods:

Overview of Prostate Cancer

Incidence rate and age: The incidence rate of prostate cancer increases with age, especially after the age of 50. Nearly 60% of prostate cancer occurs in men over 65 years old.

Etiology: The etiology of prostate cancer is not fully understood, but it is generally believed to be related to factors such as genetics, environment, and lifestyle. People with a history of prostate cancer in their immediate family members have a higher risk of developing the disease, and factors such as high-fat diet, smoking, and obesity may also increase the risk of developing the disease.

Symptoms: Prostate cancer usually has no obvious symptoms in the early stage. As the condition progresses, abnormal urination symptoms such as difficulty urinating, frequent urination, urgency to urinate, and increased nocturia may occur. Symptoms such as hematuria, hematospermia, and erectile dysfunction may also occur. Late stage bone metastasis may occur, accompanied by symptoms such as numbness and pain.

The latest treatment methods for prostate cancer

Surgical treatment: Suitable for patients with early-stage localized prostate cancer, including radical prostatectomy. The purpose of the surgery is to completely remove the tumor and preserve urinary control and erectile function.

Radiotherapy: Using high-energy radiation to kill cancer cells, it is suitable for early prostate cancer patients and can also be used for the treatment of metastatic lesions and salvage therapy for biochemical recurrence in late stage patients. Radiation therapy can be divided into two methods: external radiation and internal radiation.

Endocrine therapy: By blocking the effect of androgens on prostate cancer cells, inhibiting cancer cell growth and spread, it is suitable for advanced or metastatic prostate cancer patients and preoperative adjuvant therapy. Common anti androgen drugs include bicalutamide, flutamide, etc.

Chemotherapy: The use of chemical drugs to kill cancer cells or prevent their growth, mainly for prostate cancer patients who have already metastasized and have failed hormone therapy. The commonly used chemotherapy drugs include docetaxel, vincristine, etc.

Targeted therapy and immunotherapy: Targeted therapy mainly involves drug intervention for specific molecular abnormalities, such as the use of drugs such as abiraterone and enzalutamide. Immunotherapy activates the body's own immune system to combat tumors, and commonly used drugs include PD-1 inhibitors and CTLA-4 inhibitors.

PSMA radioligand therapy: This is an emerging treatment method that kills cancer cells by targeting prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA). For example, 177Lu-PSMA-617 has shown good efficacy in multiple clinical trials and has been recommended for the treatment of certain metastatic castration resistant prostate cancer patients.

In short, there are various treatment methods for prostate cancer, and patients should choose the most suitable treatment plan based on their own condition and doctor's advice. Meanwhile, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and regularly undergoing prostate cancer screening are also important measures for preventing prostate cancer.
